Team

Doug Garofalo, FAIA, was born in Schenectady, New York, and studied at the University of Notre Dame (B.Arch. 1981) and Yale University (M.Arch. 1987). After graduate school, Garofalo moved to Chicago, where he formed Garofalo Architects in 1998. He was most recently named a United States Artists Target Fellow in 2008. Since 1988, Garofalo has had a distinguished career as a teacher at The School of Architecture at University of Illinois Chicago, where he served as Director from 2001-2003 and is now a tenured full professor.

Andrew Schachman joined Garofalo Architects in 2004 as the day-to-day project manager for the Hyde Park Art Center. He has diverse project experience, from large-scale public and transportation infrastructure work, university and corporate buildings, basic research and bio-safety laboratories, to high-end retail and intimate residential projects.

Recognition

The work of Garofalo Architects has been widely published, both nationally and internationally, most recently in 1000x Architecture of the Americas and The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture. Their work was the subject of an exhibit and book at the Art Institute of Chicago, and has won numerous awards, such as the Chicago AIA Distinguished Building Award, and the Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design—both for the recently completed Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago, Illinois.
