PODCAST: MEET DAVID CLOVERS
On Corian exteriors and a future market between custom and tract housing.
In this podcast we visit Hometta designers Clover Lee and David Erdman in Venice, California. The partners of architecture and design firm davidclovers talk about their house project, Mass 04, and the future of a market between the custom-house and the tract home.
Clover and David have since moved to Hong Kong, where they have relocated themselve and their practice. Within a few days of their arrival, they found a storefront space for their office.
"there’s definitely a future of a market between the highly customized unique homes and the mass produced tract homes."
Within a few days of landing here, we found a storefront space for our office. The space is on a walk street (in Hong Kong, walk streets are called fongs versus mews in London) with a front patio that nearly doubles the usable square footage of the office. The patio shows promise for modeling, mockup testing and hosting happy hours on balmy evenings.
In this front patio, they are building a new security gate/storefront using a similar system of integrated Corian cladding that is used on the exterior of their Hometta house, Lunar House. When open, the gate will provide a backdrop to evening events and daily activities. When closed at night, it will emit and sprinkle artificial light onto the patio.
Hong Kong offers the perfect climate (hot and humid à la Houston) to test Corian cladding in their particular design and learn about its performance. They are working with a Corian fabricator in Hong Kong who has experience etching and forming large sheets of Corian. They are looking forward to working with them to streamline the manufacturing and installation process.
