The X House is designed to be easy to construct, adaptable to many different sites, and able to be modified easily according to client desires. The X House combines contemporary aspects with inhabitant idiosyncrasies: it offers more choice. The way a house functions, its “programming,” is here configured to produce a nuanced environment, and yet a truly alternative arrangement of spaces to is also possible. For example, while the air and water systems are set,Components can be prefabricated and shipped to site. numerous floor plans can be developed, family by family. It also is designed to be affordable to build, with many of the components able to be prefabricated and shipped to the site, minimizing the expensive on-site construction costs. Affordability also here means energy efficiency; radiant floors, well-placed skylights, super-insulated walls, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures and green roof areas.

Adjustability is not only possible but encouraged for each inhabitant. The two ends of the house may be configured as bedrooms, studios, offices, or any combination of these programs. Each area has a full bathroom and storage areas. Two triangular stairways go up from these opposite ends of X House to the living areas, open in plan, with the kitchen centered as an island. Each floor has two floor-to-ceiling windows; the lower level has two slot windows and one overhead door.
