The environmentally friendly Draft House is for those who want to take advantage of their entire site as a place for modern living, whether that’s barbecuing with friends or reading a book among the treetops.
For those who want to take advantage of their entire site as a place for modern living: barbecuing with friends or reading a book among the treetops.Draft House is completely linked to its surroundings. The private upper floor windows frame views and bring in light by day and collect breezes (drafts) by night. The public lower level is partially buried for insulation and energy conservation. The ground floor patio/garden extends living space, inviting the outside in.
By splitting the program of Draft House into two floors that have markedly different qualities, the designers pack a variety of spatial experiences into one innovative house. The upper mass of Draft House floats above the ground, collecting prevailing breezes and daylight as it shades the ground floor. This lower portion of the building nestles into the site, using bermed earth for insulation and privacy.
Walk through the front door and arrive in an open kitchen. Drop off parcels and look through the dining area and out onto a beautifully manicured terrace. This landscape feature unifies the family kitchen/dining area and a guest bedroom that can double as a home office. Both of these spaces feel larger as they expand through French doors into the back yard. An architectural core containing laundry, bathroom and storage buffer guests or busy telecommuters from the bustle of the shared spaces. Walk upstairs and retire to the main living area on the second floor. An expansive living room/study looks onto the front yard and runs the entire length of the house. Bedrooms and a full bath overlook the patio and back yard.
The Draft House is so named for its innovative system of ventilation and climate control. Sliding wooden wall panels can be opened and closed to allow breezes to move through the building. But that's not all this innovative model accomplishes: these same walls close private areas from the shared living room. Empty nesters can leave the walls open and enjoy an open plan lifestyle. Walls can be slid back into place when the family comes to visit. An exterior deck spans the back of the house and can be accessed from both bedrooms via sliding glass doors. Relax in the morning with the morning paper or call down to see when the barbecue will be ready. If you are looking for a flexible and passively environmental home that can respond to your family as it evolves and changes, Draft House is perfect for you.
